Day 14

We did it!!! We made breakfast - yippeeeeeee.

Funny thing was I wasn’t all that hungry but I still put in a sterling effort.

We decided to walk the 2 km into Kandy.

We had to walk alongside the lake in the middle of the city and we saw some wildlife.

Yes it was hot - yes I was a sweaty mess.

It’s a religious day today as it’s a full moon so everyone was wearing white - I didn’t get the memo and was wearing black ….

We went to the Temple of the Tooth Relic where hundreds had gathered but we didn’t go in as we were wearing shorts.

We did go to the Buddhist Museum though and I’ve never seen so much bling in my life.

Pity we weren’t allowed to take pictures.

Then we hot-footed it to our favourite bar for lunch.

As I mentioned before it’s a religious day so they are not allowed to serve alcohol.

Here’s Joss enjoying not getting alcohol.

Joss ordered a chicken pasta which looked and tasted lovely.

I ordered the pork chop - except it wasn’t a pork chop - it was 2 pork chops #winning and they were delicious.

We really liked the t-shirts the staff at the bar were wearing and so asked to look round the shop.

Joss made a new friend.

We bought some shirts and then toddled back up the hill (via a supermarket) back to the hotel for a shower and a wee lie down.

We were picked up on time and on the coach they handed out the usual 3 vouchers for drinks - pity they couldn’t be held over to the last game.

We went a different way to the ground and it was so much better - we were in our seats an hour or so before the game.

Our speed was vastly improved by the England bus going past us with a police escort and we sort of latched on to them - it was so funny watching other vehicles pull over for us.

Normally I buy the drinks and Joss gets the food but today we did a switch and I think I did rather well..

England won the toss and again decided to bowl first.

The Barmy Army were a little subdued tonight with there being no alcohol but the trumpeter did his best to get them going.

Sri Lanka got off to a terrific start but we did peg them back a bit in the middle - they still finished on an impressive 189-5 - that is a great score.

England, however, started badly and were 57-2 when the heavens opened, 12 behind on DLS.

The covers are put on patchwork style by hundreds of staff and as soon as as they completed the task, it stopped raining.

Then they played the covers’ hokey kokey by dragging individual sheets off to get rid of the water and then drag them back on.

This went on for half an hour before they got the go ahead to actually take them off.

When England they had been reduced to 17 overs and the total was now 168 - which meant basically that they had to go at 11 an over for 10 overs.

Gulp.

But as it was, some big hitting from Brook, Banton  and Curran saw us over the line with 3 balls to spare.

Bloody brilliant.

On the coach back I watched the last 15 minutes of the spurs v City game (2-2) and when it finished we still hadn’t made it out of the car park - it was gone midnight by now.

We got back at 12:40 and the bar was open until 1 but the lure of just one beer wasn’t enough to make me stay up - besides, an extra period of sobriety is probably exactly what I need.
